Boat Storage Tips
Exterior Preparation:
1. Clean the hull: Remove any dirt, algae, or barnacles from the hull using a pressure washer or scrub brush.
2. Inspect for damage: Look for any cracks, dents, or scratches on the hull. Repair any damage to prevent further deterioration.
3. Clean and wax: Wash the entire exterior of the boat, including the deck and topsides. Apply a coat of marine wax to protect the finish.
4. Remove accessories: Take off any removable accessories such as fishing gear, cushions, and electronics.
5. Drain water systems: Drain all water from the boat’s plumbing, including freshwater and wastewater tanks, to prevent freezing.
6. Remove the drain plug: Remove the drain plug from the boat to allow any trapped water to escape.
Engine and Mechanical Systems:
1. Change the oil and filter: Change the engine oil and filter to prevent contaminants from sitting in the engine over the winter.
2. Fuel system: Add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank and run the engine to circulate stabilized fuel through the system.
3. Fog the engine: Spray fogging oil into the intake to coat the internal engine components and protect them from corrosion.
4. Battery maintenance: Remove the boat’s batteries and store them in a cool, dry place. Consider using a battery maintainer to keep them charged.
5. Lubricate moving parts: Apply lubricant to hinges, throttle and shift cables, and other moving parts to prevent rust.
6. Check belts and hoses: Inspect all belts and hoses for signs of wear or damage and replace as needed.
7. Winterize the cooling system: Flush the engine’s cooling system with antifreeze to prevent freezing and corrosion.
Interior Preparation:
1. Remove valuables: Take out any valuable items, electronics, and personal belongings from the boat’s interior.
2. Clean the interior: Thoroughly clean and vacuum the interior to remove any dirt or debris.
3. Open compartments: Leave cabinet and locker doors open to allow air circulation and prevent musty odors.
4. Moisture control: Use moisture-absorbing products or dehumidifiers to prevent mold and mildew growth.
5. Protect upholstery: Remove cushions and store them in a dry place. Cover remaining upholstery with breathable covers.
6. Close vents and windows: Seal all openings to prevent pests from entering.
Covering and Storage:
1. Cover the boat: Use a properly fitted boat cover or shrink wrap to protect the boat from the elements.
2. Secure the cover: Ensure the cover is tightly secured to prevent wind from getting underneath it.
3. Trailer maintenance: If your boat is on a trailer, inspect the trailer for any issues and consider lubricating moving parts.
